Pleurotomaria (Coelozone) was named by Perner (1907) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl-l D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 797]. Its type is Coelozone verna. It is the type subgenus of Coelozoninae.

It was reranked as Coelozone by Knight et al. (1960), Heidelberger (2001), Sepkoski (2002) and Bouchet et al. (2005).

It was assigned to Pleurotomaria by Perner (1907); to Coelozonides by Knight et al. (1960); to Selenimorpha by Heidelberger (2001); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Coelozoninae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
