Loxocardium was named by Cossmann (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Mi Sepkoski's reference number: 914].

It was assigned to Cardiidae by Skwarko (1994); to Cardiinae by Vokes (1980) and Chiesa et al. (1995); to Orthocardiinae by Schneider (2002); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
