Mactromyopsis was named by Chavan (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett J Call Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was assigned to Mactromyidae by Cox et al. (1969) and Vokes (1980); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
