Wightonia was named by Carle (1990).

It was synonymized subjectively with Leptaeschnidium by Fleck and Nel (2003).

It was assigned to Aeschnidiidae by Carle and Wighton (1990), Nel and Martínez-Delclòs (1993) and Bechly (2007).
