Frenelopsis was named by Schenk (1869). It is considered to be a form taxon. It was considered unknown by Watson (1977).

It was assigned to Cupressineae by Knowlton (1919); to Coniferophyta by Andrews (1970); to Coniferales by Lakhanpal et al. (1976); and to Cheirolepidiaceae by Watson (1977).
