Taxonomy
Myrtea was named by Turton (1822) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant R]. It is extant. Its type is Myrtea spinifera. It is the type genus of Myrteinae.

It was reranked as Lucina (Myrtea) by Grant and Gale (1931) and Faustman (1964); it was misspelled as Myrtaea by Olsson (1931), Cox et al. (1969), Vokes (1980), Tashiro and Kozai (1982), Dockery (1982), Beu et al. (1990), Lamprell and Whitehead (1992) and Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Lucina by Grant and Gale (1931) and Faustman (1964); to Myrteinae by Cox et al. (1969) and Vokes (1980); to Lucininae by Dockery (1982); to Lucinidae by Olsson (1931), Tashiro and Kozai (1982), Beu et al. (1990) and Lamprell and Whitehead (1992); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
