Loxostomum was named by Ehrenberg (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni-u T Pale]. It was considered unknown by Loeblich and Tappan (1962).

It was assigned to Loxostomatidae by Loeblich and Tappan (1962); and to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002).

Tappan 1962Test elongate, compressed, quadrate in section, with flat or concave sides; chambers biserially arranged throughout, strongly overlapping and arched in the adult with a tendency to become uniserial; sutures limbate, arched, the sutural thickening merging laterally into the longitudinal carinae at the four margins; wall calcareous, finely perforate; aperture terminal, slit-like to ovate, commonly with a lip which may be very finely tuberculate, but lacking any internal toothplate.
