Neotrapezium was named by Habe (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Trapezium (Neotrapezium) by Matsubara et al. (2010).

It was assigned to Trapeziidae by Vokes (1980); to Trapezidae by Squires (1999); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Trapezium by Matsubara et al. (2010).
