Melanthrips was named by Haliday (1836). It is extant. It is the type genus of Melanothripinae.
It was assigned to Aeolothripidae by Priesner (1929); to Thripidae by Park and Downing (2001); and to Melanthripidae by Mound and Hastenpflug-Vesmanis (2021).
