Mantoidea was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant. Its type is Gryllus (Mantis).

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Cernomantodea by Svensen and Whiting (2009).

It was assigned to Mantodea by Wang and Jin (1995); to Eumantodea by Grimaldi (2003); and to Mantidea by Schwarz and Roy (2019).
