Paphia was named by Röding (1798) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Tapetinae by Vokes (1980); to Veneridae by Nagao (1928), Oostingh (1935), Hassan (1953), Marasti (1973) and Lamprell and Whitehead (1992); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
