Plagiocardium was named by Cossmann (1866) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Mi Sepkoski's reference number: 914].

It was reranked as Laevicardium (Plagiocardium) by Gilbert (1936).

It was assigned to Laevicardium by Gilbert (1936); to Cardiinae by Vokes (1980) and Freneix et al. (1988); to Cardiidae by Lamprell and Whitehead (1992) and Schneider (2002); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
