Psilopteridae was named by Dolgopol de Saez (1927).
It was reranked as the subfamily Psilopterinae by Mourer-Chauviré (1981), Alvarenga and Holfing (2003), Gould and Quitmyer (2005), Acosta Hospitaleche and Tambussi (2005), Bertelli et al. (2007), Angst et al. (2013) and Acosta Hospitaleche and Jones (2024).
It was assigned to Phororhacoidea by Wetmore (1960); to Cariamae by Cracraft (1968); and to Phorusrhacidae by Mourer-Chauviré (1981), Alvarenga and Holfing (2003), Gould and Quitmyer (2005), Acosta Hospitaleche and Tambussi (2005), Bertelli et al. (2007), Angst et al. (2013) and Acosta Hospitaleche and Jones (2024).
