Taxonomy
Purpurocardia was named by Maxwell (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani R Sepkoski's reference number: 728]. It is extant. Its type is Cardita purpurata.

It was assigned to Venericardiinae by Beu et al. (1990); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Carditidae by Beu (2006).
