Taxonomy
Reticularia caroli was named by Gemmellaro (1899).

It was recombined as Squamularia (Neophricodothyris) caroli by Reed (1944); it was misspelled as Squamularia calori by Shimizu (1961), Jin and Ye (1979) and Wang et al. (1982); it was recombined as Permophricodothyris caroli by Grunt and Dmitriev (1973), Shi et al. (2002), Verna and Angiolini (2010) and Verna and Angiolini (2011).
