Rupellaria was named by Fleuriau de Bellevue (1802) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R]. It is extant. Its type is Venus lithophaga.

It was reranked as Petricola (Rupellaria) by Dall (1898).

It was assigned to Petricola by Dall (1898); to Petricolidae by Woodring (1982); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
