Sanguinolaria was named by Lamarck (1799) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Psammobiidae by Olsson (1931); to Sanguinolariinae by Woodring (1982); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
