Claibornites (Saxolucina) was named by Stewart (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Ol-l Sepkoski's reference number: 700]. Its type is Lucina saxorum.

It was reranked as Saxolucina by Vokes (1980), Zinsmeister (1982), Sepkoski (2002) and Stilwell et al. (2004).

It was assigned to Claibornites by Stewart (1930); to Milthinae by Vokes (1980); to Lucinidae by Zinsmeister (1982); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lucininae by Stilwell et al. (2004).
