Semele was named by Schumacher (1817) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R Sepkoski's reference number: 864]. It is extant. Its type is Tellina proficua.
It was assigned to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); to Semelidae by Glenn (1904), Woodring (1925), da Silva Forti (1969), Vokes (1980), Woodring (1982), Ward and Blackwelder (1987), Lamprell and Whitehead (1992) and Moore (2003); and to Semelinae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
