Sphaeriola was named by Stoliczka (1871) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett J Bath Sepkoski's reference number: 93]. Its type is Cardium madridi.

It was reranked as Fimbria (Sphaeriola) by Parona (1889).

It was assigned to Fimbria by Parona (1889); to Corbulidae by Marwick (1953); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Fimbriidae by Cox et al. (1969) and Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
