Polycytellidae was named by Tillyard (1922). Its type is Polycytella.
It was synonymized subjectively with Glosselytridae by Rasnitsyn and Aristov (2013).
It was assigned to Jurinida by Vilesov and Novokshonov (1994); and to Glosselytrodea by Ponomarenko (1988), Martins-Neto et al. (2003), Martins-Neto et al. (2006), Béthoux and Anderson (2021) and Pérez-de la Fuente et al. (2022).
It was synonymized subjectively with Glosselytridae by Rasnitsyn and Aristov (2013).
