Taxonomy
Kayentapus hopii was named by Welles (1971). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is UCMP 83668, a footprint (cast of trackway I (5 prints)), and it is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Moenkopi Wash tracksite, UCMP V6898, which is in a Sinemurian/Pliensbachian terrestrial mudstone in the Kayenta Formation of Arizona.

Diagnosis
Reference | Diagnosis | |
---|---|---|
S. P. Welles 1971 | Pes: Length of digit II, 160 to 175 [mm]; of III 205 to 240; of IV 180 to 192; of the foot 340 (left) and 355 (right); between tips of II and IV 290 to 295; projection of III beyond II and IV 120 to 135; divarication of II and III 26° to 42°; of III and IV 29° to 40°; of II and IV 60° to 72°. Length of pace 1880 to 1910; pace angulation 174° to 175°; divarication of III from midline 0; inter-pes distance 40 to 100; ratio of pace to pes 5.50; metatarsal pad isolated. | |
A. R. C. Milner et al. 2009 | The ichnogenoholotypic trackway of Kayentapus (for K. hopii) demonstrates significant variation from print to print, making a morphological diagnosis for the taxon difficult to establish, but the ichnogenus may be characterized by slender digits that taper less and have less acute angles of divarication than those of either Grallator or Eubrontes. A more stringent, quantitative diagnosis also includes: length between 11.5–40 cm, metatarsophalangeal pad of digit IV well defined, and angle of divarication between digits III and IV greater than that between digits II and III. |
