Terraia was named by Cox (1934) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-u Tr l]. Its type is Solenomorpha altissima.

It was assigned to Tellinacea by Vokes (1980); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Crassatelloidea by David et al. (2011).
