Thetis was named by Sowerby (1826) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut-l K Turo Sepkoski's reference number: 159,789]. Its type is Thetis oblonga.

It was considered a nomen nudum by Vokes (1980).

It was assigned to Mactromyidae by Cox et al. (1969) and Tashiro (1988); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
