Cytherea (Transennella) was named by Dall (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R Sepkoski's reference number: 705]. It is extant. Its type is Cytherea conradina.

It was reranked as Transennella by Woodring (1982), Ward and Blackwelder (1987), Todd (2001) and Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Cytherea by Dall (1884); to Bivalvia by Addicott (1966); to Meretricinae by Woodring (1982); to Veneridae by Ward and Blackwelder (1987) and Todd (2001); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
