Venericardia was named by Lamarck (1801) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi R Sepkoski's reference number: 790]. It is extant. Its type is Venericardia imbricata.

It was reranked as Cardita (Venericardia) by Deshayes (1858) and Vredenburg (1928).
