Phymatoceratinae was named by Hyatt (1867). It is not extant. Its type is Phymatoceras.

It was assigned to Hammatoceratidae by Arkell (1952); and to Phymatoceratidae by Donovan et al. (1981) and Arthur et al. (1993).
