Poposauroidea was named by Nopcsa (1923). Its type is Poposaurus.

It was reranked as the superfamily Poposauroidea by Huene (1934) and Huene (1934); it was reranked as the unranked clade Poposauroidea by Weinbaum and Hungerbühler (2007), Nesbitt (2011) and Gauthier et al. (2011).

It was assigned to Orthopoda by Nopcsa (1928); to Ornithischia by Huene (1934) and Huene (1934); to Paracrocodylomorpha by Weinbaum and Hungerbühler (2007) and Nesbitt (2011); and to Suchia by Gauthier et al. (2011).
