Taxonomy
Gastrochaena was named by Spengler (1783) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath R Sepkoski's reference number: 93]. It is extant. Its type is Gastrochaena cuneiformis.

It was assigned to Gastrochaenidae by Vokes (1980), Ward and Blackwelder (1987), Freneix et al. (1988) and Lamprell and Healy (1998); and to Myoida by Sepkoski (2002).
