Pholas was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R]. It is extant. Its type is Pholas dactylus.

It was assigned to Pholadinae by Glenn (1904) and Vokes (1980); to Myoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pholadidae by Lamprell and Healy (1998) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
