Xylophaga was named by Turton (1822) [Sepkoski's age data: T R Sepkoski's reference number: 803]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Xylophagidae.
It was assigned to Pholadidae by Wienrich (1999); to Myoida by Sepkoski (2002); to Xylophagidae by Bouchet et al. (2010); and to Xylophagaidae by Voight et al. (2019).
