Taxonomy
Sivapithecus africanus was named by Le Gros Clark and Leakey (1951). It is the type species of Equatorius.
It was recombined as Kenyapithecus africanus by Leakey (1968); it was recombined as Equatorius africanus by Ward et al. (1999).
