Velatida was named by Perrier (1893) [Initial spelling "Velata", corrected by Blake (1987)]. It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Gale (2011).

It was reranked as the unranked clade Velatida by Gale (2011).

It was assigned to Asteroidea by Perrier (1893) and Hess (1972); to Spinulosacea by Blake (1989); to Spinulosida by Gale (2011); and to Valvatacea by Mah and Blake (2012).
