Savignaster was named by Gale (2011). Its type is Savignaster wardi. It was considered monophyletic by Gale (2011) and Gale (2018).

It was assigned to Pterasteridae by Gale (2011), Gale (2011) and Rousseau et al. (2018); and to Pterasteridae by Gale (2018).
