Barbosania was named by Elgin and Frey (2011). Its type is Barbosania gracilirostris. It was considered monophyletic by Elgin and Frey (2011).

It was assigned to Ornithocheiridae by Elgin and Frey (2011); and to Targaryendraconia by Pegas et al. (2020).
