Taxonomy
Fulica americana was named by Gmelin (1789). It is extant.

Synonyms
  • Fulica hesterna was named by Howard (1963). Its type specimen is LACM 2873, a limb element, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Arroyo Tapiado, which is in a Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in the Palm Springs Formation of California.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Fulica americana by Olson (1974) and Olson (1977).
