Rutonia was named by Yang (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sepkoski's reference number: ZR90]. It is not extant. Its type is Rutonia bangonghuensis.
It was synonymized subjectively with Requienia by Fang et al. (2009).
It was assigned to Requieniidae by Yang et al. (1982); to Hippuritoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Matheroniinae by Skelton (2013).
