Tetraspongia was named by Termier and Termier (1989) [in Masse, Termier, Termier (1989)]. It is not extant. Its type is Tetraspongia balmensis.

It was assigned to Lithistida by Masse et al. (1989); and to Vetulininae by Finks et al. (2004).
