Latentifistula was named by Nazarov and Ormiston (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 535]. It is the type genus of Latentifistulidae.

It was assigned to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Latentifistulidae by De Wever et al. (2001), Thassanapak (2015) and Noble et al. (2017).
