Taxonomy
Cossonus was named by Clairville (1798). It is extant. It is the type genus of Cossonides, Cossonini.
It was assigned to Fracticornes by Latreille (1802); to Coleoptera by Cockerell (1925); and to Cossonini by Bouchard et al. (2011), Poinar and Legalov (2014), Legalov (2015) and Bukejs and Legalov (2017).
