Cochlodesma was named by Couthouy (1839) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1248]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Periplomatidae by Durham (1944), Moore (1976), Moore (1984), Ward and Blackwelder (1987) and Wienrich (1999); and to Pholadomyoida by Sepkoski (2002).
