Laternula was named by Röding (1798) [Sepkoski's age data: K u R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Pholadomyoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Laternulidae by Russell and Landes (1937), Vokes (1980), Lamprell and Healy (1998) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
