Rhabdoptilus was named by Brongniart (1894). Its type is Rhabdoptilus edwardsi. It is the type genus of Rhabdoptilidae.
It was assigned to Lithomantidae by Handlirsch (1906); to Rhabdoptilidae by Handlirsch (1919) and Handlirsch (1922); and to Graphiptilidae by Kukalová (1969), Brauckmann (1984) and Carpenter (1992).
