Palaeocorbula was named by Reed (1932) [Sepkoski's age data: P l]. Its type is Palaeocorbula difficilis.

It was assigned to Grammysiidae by Vokes (1980); to Sanguinolitinae by Morris et al. (1991); to Pholadomyoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sanguinolitidae by Galli (2013).
