Murex messorius was named by Sowerby (1841) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Miocene-Recent; Caribbean.]. It is extant. Its type specimen is BMNH 1964-349, a shell.
It was recombined as Murex (Haustellum) messorius by Trechmann (1933) and Vokes (1989); it was recombined as Murex (Murex) messorius by Vokes (1963); it was recombined as Vokesimurex messorius by Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
