Typhis expansus was named by Sowerby (1874). It is extant.

It was recombined as Typhis (Talityphis) expansus by Gertman (1969) and Vokes (1989); it was recombined as Pterynotus expansus by Fair (1976); it was recombined as Typhina expansa by Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
