Taxonomy
Typhis obesus was named by Gabb (1873). Its type specimen is ANSP 3251, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Typhis (Talityphis) alatus obesus by Woodring (1959); it was recombined as Typhis (Talityphis) obesus by Gertman (1969) and Vokes (1983); it was recombined as Typhina obesa by Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
