Taxonomy
Nautilus whitneyi was named by Gabb (1864). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Buena Vista district, Humboldt mining region, which is in an Anisian carbonate limestone in Nevada.
It was recombined as Grypoceras whitneyi by Smith (1914), Kummel (1953) and Silberling and Nichols (1982).
