Poromya was named by Forbes (1844) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Poromyidae by Vokes (1980), Lamprell and Healy (1998) and Wienrich (1999); and to Pholadomyoida by Sepkoski (2002).
