Verticordia was named by Sowerby (1844) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Verticordiidae by Cox et al. (1969), Vokes (1980), Ward and Blackwelder (1987), Lamprell and Healy (1998) and Wienrich (1999); and to Pholadomyoida by Sepkoski (2002).
